I first learned
The Bluebell of Scotland, a traditional Scottish song, whilst at primary school back in the late 1940's. I always liked the melody and the optimistic lyrics. The naive belief that the singer's beloved Highland laddie could not die in a foreign war is very touching. The version that I sing today can be found in
It's fun to sing.
Since writing the above in the late 1990's, I have recently (May 2013) found a variant entitled
The Blue Bell of Gateshead given in
Rhymes of Northern Bards (1812).
